Inconvenient Facts

This is the future of Weldon Ridge & Cary Park with An 1,300+ student private school off Yates Store Road without a busing option.  Mills Park Elem has ~1,000 students. Now imagine all those kids getting to school without a bus on our neighborhood roads? Future of Cary and Weldon Ridge

All of us want high quality schools for our children; however, the proposed 1,300+ private school off Yates Store Road in Chatham County will fulfill that void for only a select few – while creating a far bigger void for area families that we ALL need to consider

Please check out this video showing how Yates Store Road is a single lane road. Keep in mind that thousands of new cars would be added on this road which is already at full capacity from surrounding neighborhoods.

Local traffic may increase by 6,000 trips per day

  • The 1,300+ student charter school proposed at the end of Yates Store Rd will not offer buses. This is expected to result in an additional 5,979 cars/day on nearby roads.[1]
  • The Municipal School Transportation Assistance (MSTA) recommends 11,435 linear feet for cars to queue while dropping off and picking up, but the Town of Cary’s Traffic Analysis Report (TAR) recommends only 7,281 feet of queue. Assuming a 50/50 split, there will be 565 cars queuing for each of the school’s start times.1,3
    • Where will the 200 cars go that can’t fit in the recommended queue? That is 4,000 feet of overflow “spillage” into our neighborhood streets. How will public school buses, EMS vehicles, and residents get through the neighborhood?

Roadway improvements might not happen

  • NC Senate Bill 296 exempts school builders from being required to make/pay for infrastructure improvements that are not on their property or connected to a driveway leading to the school.
    • If we don’t hold the developer and Town of Cary accountable, who will improve infrastructure (install traffic lights, crosswalks, speed bumps, etc.) to ensure the safety of our roads and pedestrians?[2],3

Parking will spill over into our neighborhoods

  • Current plans include 343 parking spaces at the school for staff and students. The study assumes 268 staff, plus an estimated 359 junior and senior year students. This adds up to 627 potential cars needing to park on site all day, not including visitors.
    • Is it okay for students, staff, and visitors to park on our neighborhood streets? If there’s not enough parking on the campus, where else would they park?
